Marketing Without Social Media: A Sustainable Approach for Coaches
Does growing an online business really require you to keep showing up on social media?
For many coaches and service providers, social media has become so closely linked with marketing that stepping away can feel risky. But being constantly visible isn’t the same as having a marketing strategy that brings in clients.
In this conversation, Tiffany talks with Polly Pollock, speaker, published author, and marketing mentor for online coaches and practitioners with busy brains. Polly shares why she stopped posting on social media and built her marketing around her ADHD brain, her capacity, and strategies that could create more leverage.
The result is an important reminder for anyone building a coaching business: sustainable marketing doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.
Sustainable Marketing for Your Online Business Starts With Capacity
One of the biggest ideas Polly shares is Capacity-Conscious Marketing™.
Instead of starting with what everyone else says you need to do, this approach starts with your actual capacity. How do you work best? What can you realistically sustain? Which marketing activities make sense for your energy, business, and clients?
This can be especially relevant for ADHD entrepreneurs and neurodivergent coaches, but the principle applies much more broadly.
When you’re running an online business, there will always be more marketing you could do. The goal isn’t necessarily to fit it all in. It’s to choose marketing methods that can support the business you’re building without requiring you to be everywhere.
Marketing Without Social Media Can Still Create Consistent Visibility
Consistency is often confused with constantly showing up.
You might feel pressure to post every day, create more content, engage with other accounts, follow trends, and stay visible across multiple platforms. But those activities only make sense if they’re helping move your business forward.
Polly encourages coaches to look beyond likes, comments, and engagement and ask a more useful question: Is this marketing actually bringing in clients?
That question can change how you think about visibility.
Social media-free marketing doesn’t mean disappearing. It means exploring other ways to reach the right people, including podcast guesting, guest teaching, strategic partnerships, and email marketing.
These methods can give one piece of work a longer life and help you connect with established audiences instead of continually trying to generate attention from scratch.
How to Grow Your Coaching Business With Higher-Leverage Marketing
If social media is taking a lot of your time or energy, it may be useful to review your marketing before automatically creating another post.
A few questions can help:
Look at where clients actually come from. Are social media followers becoming inquiries and clients, or are referrals, collaborations, email, and other channels doing more of that work?
Consider podcast guesting or guest teaching. Sharing your expertise with an existing audience can build trust and introduce your work to people who may never discover one of your posts.
Explore strategic partnerships. Other coaches, service providers, and businesses may serve audiences that naturally overlap with yours.
Build your email marketing. Email gives you a way to continue the conversation with potential clients without depending on an algorithm to reach them.
The aim isn’t to replace one overwhelming marketing checklist with another.
It’s to identify a smaller number of sustainable marketing activities that match your capacity and support how you want to grow your business.
Capacity-Conscious Marketing Helps Coaches Build Sustainable Businesses
There is no prize for doing the most marketing.
For coaches and service providers, the more useful goal is creating a marketing system that helps the right people find you, understand what you offer, and take the next step when they’re ready.
That might include social media. It might not.
Polly’s experience offers another option for anyone who has assumed consistent sales require constant content creation. By separating consistency from constant visibility, you can make more intentional decisions about where your marketing energy goes.
Building an online business around how you actually work isn’t about avoiding marketing. It’s about finding sustainable ways to stay visible, build relationships, and bring in clients without making social media the engine of your business.
